Somnology includes sleep research and sleep medicine and is one of the youngest medical fields. The term is derived from somnum (Latin: sleep) and logos (ancient Greek: teaching, meaning).
Many people - particularly in the western society - suffer from insufficient physical activity as well as from unhealthy eating and sleeping habits. While poor nutrition and lack of fitness often have visible consequences, the repercussions of poor sleep health are not as obvious. Although restful sleep is important in all areas of life, the effects of poor sleep quality and unhealthy sleep habits are complex and sometimes hidden.
Compared to the overwhelming opportunities for counseling and support in the field of nutrition, exercise and fitness, professional help and clinical counseling to promote healthy sleep are grossly neglected. Even among top athletes and executives, it is a rarity when sleep receives adequate attention besides physical exercise and healthy diet. This deficit in our health care system is on the one hand due to a lack of specialists in the field of somnology, and on the other hand due to the focus on measurable sleep disturbances and on costly sleep studies. If no relevant respiratory or movement disorder in sleep can been found, many sleep-disturbed persons feel left alone with their complaints and questions.
In our counseling institution Somnologie & Schlafcoaching we attempt to counteract the scarceness of clinical sleep counseling. Thanks to specialized knowledge, specific training and a lot of experience, costly sleep testing and other checkups can be avoided or limited to the most necessary. Health and life quality are based on the three main biological pillars of sleep, nutrition and fitness. That is why modern health care is increasingly devoted to the promotion of a healthy lifestyle and disease prevention, leading to a shift of health services from the doctor's office to the people's daily life. Sleep plays a central role in this health approach because it is a lage part and indispensable companion of our life.
The services offered at Somnologie & Schlafcoaching include diagnostic clarification and treatment of all forms of sleep-wake disorders, as well as individualized counseling to improve sleep health. Because sleep and expectations concerning sleep vary greatly from person to person, individualized assessment and counseling are critical to optimizing sleep habits and sleep satisfaction.
We are happy to send printed copies for display in your practice, clinic or other institutional health service (counseling, physiotherapy, fitness, etc.).
